The retina initially perceives images as impulses, and optic nerves essentially connect our eyes and brains.

For instance, when we see a lot of trees and flowers, our retina first picks up on the color and intensity of the plants and then generates impulses.

Our optic nerves carry these impulses to the brain.

Thus, the brain must be able to interpret these impulses in order to see the final image as it is, and this can only occur if optic nerves are able to send these impulses to the brain in the first place.

The optic nerve's function is to transmit visual information from the retina to the brain, which is what makes seeing possible. If the optic nerve isn't connected to the retina, blindness would ensue from the inability of the optic nerve to transmit visual information to the brain.
