Light-independent reactions, also referred to as the Calvin cycle, take place in the stroma of the chloroplasts. They use the ATP and NADPH generated in the light-dependent reactions to convert carbon dioxide into glucose through a series of enzyme-mediated reactions. Light-dependent reactions take place in the thylakoid membranes of the chloroplasts. They require light energy to convert ADP and NADP+ into ATP and NADPH. These reactions also release oxygen as a byproduct.
