Stratfied squamous cells are found in the lining of the mouth, esophagus and anus and simple columnar lines the alimentary canal from the stomach to the rectum.

Stratified squamous cells provide protection against: mechanical friction - rubbing and physical trauma from external sources; chemical damage - environmental and internal chemicals/compounds degrading epithelial lining; simple columnar epithelial cells can specialize to secrete mucus that coats and shields the surrounding surface from damage.
