Why is water split during the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is divided into 2 phases. First phase is called Light Phase and the second phase is called Dark phase.

  1. Water is absolute requirement for photosynthesis to occur.
  2. During Light reactions of Photosynthesis, the chlorophyll will be activated by light.
  3. This light activated chlorophyll will split the water molecule. This process is called Photolysis.
  4. Water molecule is split to release H+ ions and also oxygen.
