A neuron's structure is made up of an axon, dendrites, and cell body (soma). Neural impulses, or action potentials, are produced when a neuron receives signals from other neurons through its dendrites. These signals cause changes in the neuron's membrane potential, which depolarizes the membrane. If the depolarization reaches a threshold level, voltage-gated ion channels open, allowing an influx of sodium ions, further depolarizing the membrane. This depolarization propagates along the axon as an action potential. The action potential travels down the axon to the axon terminals, where it causes the release of neurotransmitters into the synapse. Neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the dendrites or cell body of the next neuron, continuing the transm
