The importance of glycolysis is to take glucose and break it down into 2 pyruvate molecules, 2 NADH molecules (electrons carrier important in the Krebs cycle), and 2 ATP.

To make more ATP, the cells must oxidize pyruvate to acetyl CoA and then transfer that acetyl CoA into the electron transport chain and Krebs cycle.

Note: While the other phases of cellular respiration do require oxygen, glycolysis is anaerobic and does not.

It should be noted that substrate-level phosphorylation, which occurs during glycolysis, is the process by which ATP is created. Specifically, a phosphate group separates from a substrate and combines with ADP to form ATP.
