Are there any theories to explain what the Universe is expanding into?

In a word, no.

The current belief is that the universe is not expanding into anything, but that space and time are being created along with the expansion of the universe. There is no "anything" beyond the edge of the universe. Not a very informative answer I suppose! Perhaps others can add to it.

While some theories contend that the universe is expanding into space that is higher than our own, others contend that this expansion is occurring inside our own space and does not require the existence of an extra dimension.
