Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, is a molecule that stores energy and is primarily used for intracellular energy transfer. It is made up of three phosphate groups and an adenosine (adenine + ribose sugar molecule) molecule. ATP is synthesized within the mitochondria and is normally "used for later" when a catabolic reaction takes place, such as aerobic respiration.

Energy is released when ATP is used as a source of energy and loses one of its phosphate groups to become ADP (adenosine diphosphate). This reaction can be summarized by the following word equation:
