Viruses are considered as living or non-living particle. Outside the host they are non-living but inside the host they become alive. They depend on the biosynthetic machinery of the host cell.

As infectious entities, viruses are made up primarily of nucleic acid and proteins. They are acellular, non-living when outside of their host, but become living when inside the host by utilizing the metabolic processes of the host cell. As a result, they are classified as either living or non-living particles, which is why they are also known as intracellular obligate parasites.
