Chromosomes are protected by telomeres.

Telomeres are repetitive sequences of nucleotides found at the tail end of each chromosome. Since the enzymes involved in DNA replication have difficulty replicating all the way to the end, chromosomes are frequently cut short during DNA replication. By adding a repetitive sequence of nucleotides, a buffer is created to ensure that no critical sections of the chromosome are inadvertently cut short.
