What is the theory that explains how the solar system was formed?

According to this theory, about 5 billion years ago, shock waves from a supernova disrupted a nearby nebula. The nebula began to rotate, and gravity pulled more and more matter into a central disk. That central disk became the sun. Clumps of gas and dust formed around the central disk. They would from the planets and other objects in the solar system.

The theory that explains how the solar system was formed is called the nebular hypothesis. According to this theory, the solar system formed from a giant rotating cloud of gas and dust called a solar nebula. As the nebula collapsed under its own gravity, it began to spin faster and flatten into a disk shape. Most of the material gathered in the center to form the Sun, while the remaining dust and gas clumped together to form the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets.
