The function of the vast majority of chlorophyll is to absorb light and transfer that light energy by resonance energy. This energy is transferred to a specific chlorophyll pair in the reaction centre of the photosystems.

The function of the reaction centre chlorophyll is to use the energy transferred to it from the other chlorophyll pigments to undergo a specific redox reaction. The chlorophyll gives an electron to an Electron Transfer System. This reaction allows all photosynthetic organisms to produce oxygen and is the source for practically all the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere.

Chlorophyll absorbs light energy mostly in the blue portion of the electro magnetic spectrum, followed by the red portion.

Chlorophyll molecules are specifically arranged in and around photosystems , that are embedded in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts.
