They are called "animal fungi" because, like animals, they reproduce by spores with chitinous cell walls, which is a fungal characteristic. They are found on decaying twigs and rocks. Like fungi, they are a group of decomposers and aid in recycling minerals and important compounds like carbon and nitrogen. Hence the name "false fungi."
