The modern taxonomy system organizes organisms according to their evolutionary relationships, genetic similarities, and shared characteristics. It is based on the Linnaean taxonomy, which divides organisms into a hierarchy of increasingly specific groups. The main levels of classification, from broadest to most specific, are: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
