What is the difference between sperm and semen?
Semen carries the sperm for a safe transport and sperm is the male gamete.
As sperm can be very fragile, semen, also called seminal fluid, is responsible for ensuring that the sperm are transported safely for fertilization. Therefore, semen can be thought of as a layer of protection for the sperm.
The male gamete, or sex cell, is called sperm. It contains half of the total number of chromosomes that an average human body cell may contain. Through meiotic cell division, a sperm cell can only contain 23 chromosomes. During normal fertilization, these 23 chromosomes fuse with the remaining 23 chromosomes from the female's egg cell to form a zygote that contains 46 chromosomes.
