Light independent part of photosynthesis involves reduction of #CO_2# to #C_6H_12O_6#.

In photosynthesis, there are two steps:

  1. Hill's or Light's reaction 2. Blackmann's or Dark's reaction
In light reaction, solar energy is entrapped by chlorophyll pigment. Solar energy is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP molecules. This is termed by photophosphorylation . Hydrolysis of water occurs to liberate #O_2# and reducing power in the form of #NADPH2# is produced.
Dark reaction involves reduction of #CO_2# to glucose ( #C_6H_12O_6#) utilizing ATPs and #NADPH2# produced during light reaction.

As a result, a dark reaction can happen without light but depends on the outcomes of a light-dependent reaction.
