Human embryogenesis is the process of cell division and cellular differentiation of the embryo that occurs during the early stages of development.

Human embryology is the study of the first eight weeks of development, which is referred to as embryogenesis.

A single-celled zygote is formed during the fertilisation of an egg cell and a sperm cell, which takes about ten days to reach the germinal stage. The zygote then starts to divide through a process known as cleavage, resulting in the formation of a blastocyte, which implants in the uterus.

The next stage of embryogenesis is called gastrulation, and it is during this stage that the three germ layers of the embryo form through a process known as histogenesis. The processes of neurulation and organogenesis then follow.

Coordinated changes in cell division, growth, and expression of genes occur throughout the entire process.
