Diffusion is the movement of substances from high concentration to low concentration. Osmosis is the diffusion of water. Facilitated diffusion requires no energy.

When a substance has the tendency to diffuse from a high concentration to a low concentration, it can be visualized as a permeable cell membrane. Specifically, given a cell membrane with a high concentration of glucose on the right side and a very low concentration on the left, the glucose on the right side would diffuse across the membrane to the left side until the concentrations of glucose on both sides are equal.

A high concentration of water would migrate to a low concentration of water through osmosis, which is essentially diffusion with water.

When molecules are able to pass through a cell membrane without the need for additional energy, this process is known as facilitated diffusion. The most common example of facilitated diffusion is the flow of water through transmembrane proteins, which function solely on the concentration differences between the molecules on either side of the membrane.
