Answer 2

Severe painful infection is caused by varicella zoster virus when it becomes activated within dorsal root ganglion. Skin rashes initially appear along the nerve which soon turn into fluid filled blisters.

Varicella zoster is the same virus that causes chicken pox. The viral particles may escape detection by our immune system by staying dormant in the nerve root for many years.

()

The virus becomes active when immunity is low, specially in aged persons. Even before the rashes appear, there could be stinging sensation and pain in the area. The disease is called shingles or simply herpes.

()

The blisters heal very slowly, by forming crust and even after the crusts are gone, the pain may continue due to neuralgia (throbbing pain in a damaged nerve).

Varicella zoster is a DNA virus. Antiviral medicines, when taken within 72 hours of appearance of initial symptms, may provide some relief by reducing the severity.
