You can find examples of deforestation in far too many places today. Take for example the Amazon Rainforest in South America. Twenty percent of it has been lost over the last forty years . In addition to being a source of timber, trees are cut to make room for cattle and soy farms.

The island of Borneo in Indonesia has also experienced rapid deforestation. The image below shows forest cover on the island by decade: Deforestation rates were very high during 1980-90s . These trees are removed for timber and to make room for the the palm oil industry.

For more examples, TreeHugger did an article in 2009 about ten countries with the highest deforestation rates that is worth checking out.
