Miller and Urey's award-winning experiment suggested that Oparin and Haldane's early atmosphere contained hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and water vapor.
Through the use of an electric spark, the researchers were able to create amino acids that are important to biology, like glycine and alanine.
The reaction flask would have exploded if oxygen had been present in Miller and Urey's mixture of gases.
Oxygen could not have existed in the early atmosphere if the molecules required for life could only have been created by natural processes.
Nevertheless, a lot of scientists now think that early earth's atmosphere originated from volcanoes rather than interstellar gas clouds, so the early earth's atmosphere was not the same as the one used in the Miller and Urey experiments.
"That an oxygen-free atmosphere has existed at any time during the span of geological history recorded in well preserved sedimentary rocks" is a claim made by Michael Kimberly in a 1979 paper.
There is insufficient evidence to conclude that the atmosphere proposed by Miller and Urey never existed. If life (living cells) originated naturally, the atmosphere had to have been different from what it is today and contain a sizable amount of oxygen.
