In early 17th century Massachusetts, who was granted freeman status?

Answer 1

A male who was also a member of the Puritan Church, if free of other obligations (indentured or probationary).

It was stated that a freeman owed nothing to anybody but God and was debt-free.

The word "freeman" dates back to the 12th century in Europe and was widely used as a Colonial American term during the Puritan era. In the Massachusetts Bay Colony, a man had to be a church member in order to be considered a freeman.

In other colonies, church membership was not expressly mandated.
