What was the Iroquois League and why was it established?
The League or sometimes called the Confederacy was established for peace among the tribes. To the people themselves there is no difference.
The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee as they call themselves were very important participants in the early years of colonization of North America. They were natural enemies of the Algonquin (and some Iroquois) speaking peoples in Northern North America, despite the fact that the Iroquois language was widely spoken. A group of five tribes eventually joined to promote peaceful relations among themselves.
A difficult complication was the confusing difference between the British and the Colonists; the Confederacy split over who to side with during the Revolutionary War. They tried to be neutral but the War happened in their backyard and they could hardly stay out of it. The Iroquois were not included in the peace negotiations.
After the War of 1812, the British no longer supported any Native people against the Americans, but they were natural allies of the British for a while. They fought the French extensively over the 17th century. Through numerous shifting alliances, they manage to survive in a very hostile situation.
