Similar to the stars themselves, and from the same raw materials (residues from supernovae, interstellar matter), the planets formed by the gradual grouping of those materials. Further meteor/asteroid impacts may have added minor amounts of mass.

Small particles collided and aggregated over time to form larger bodies known as planetesimals, which then continued to collide and grow into protoplanets, which eventually became the planets we see today. This process is known as accretion.
