The Earth and other planets were formed from dust particles clumping together.
Once the Sun was formed it was surrounded by a protoplanetary disk. This consists of dust, ices and gases. The gases tended to get blown towards the outer solar system by the solar wind. This is why the inner planets are rocky and the outer planets are gas giants.
The dust and ice particles tend to collide due to the effects of gravity and also electrostatic charges. When they collide they clump together.
Over time the clumps get bigger and fewer. Eventually the planet is formed and is effectively the only body in its orbit except for any moons.
It is now thought that the Moon was formed when a planet the size of Mars hit the early Earth. The material ejected from the collision became the Moon.
