Because there is no placenta to feed the embryo from what the mother eats (as humans and mammals do), the egg yolk acts as a nutrition depot for the embryo to be provided with the necessary nutrients for development and growth. The development of a chicken embryo is very similar to that of a human embryo. It begins with the two haploid gametes from the parents forming a diploid cell, and then the differentiation begins by mitosis.
