Elevated levels of estrogen prevent the pituitary gland from secreting growth hormone (FSH).

The ovulation process:

The pituitary gland secretes luteinizing hormone when there is a decrease in FSH and an increase in estrogen (LH).

Ovulation is brought on by luteinizing hormone (discharge of ovum from follicle).

Luteinization:

*Now, if fertilization happens, the zygote implantation occurs and the female becomes pregnant; if it doesn't, the final stage of the female reproductive cycle, known as menstruation, begins.

After ovulation, the ruptured follicle gives rise to the corpus luteum, which secretes the hormone progesterone.
