Algae reproduce asexually through a range of spore forms, including

  1. Zoospores: flagelated and frequently eyespotted, these are typically formed under favorable conditions (e.g., Chlamydomonas). Compound zoospores, also known as synzoospores, are formed in Vaucheria.
  1. Aplanospores: these are thin-walled, non-motile zoospores that form when protoplasts within a cell cleave under unfavorable circumstances, such as in Ulothrix
  1. Akinetes: thick-walled, non-motile, formed under unfavorable conditions as a method of perinnation; upon release, they form new thalli, such as Anabaena.
  1. The thick-walled aplanospores known as hypnospores are formed during unfavorable conditions. When these conditions persist, the protoplasm of hypnospores divides to form cysts, such as Chlamydomonas nivalis.
  1. Tetraspores: these are non-motile, haploid, thin-walled spores that result from reduction division in diploid tetrasporangia, such as those belonging to the Phaeophceae and Rhodophyceae families.
  1. Autospores: these resemble the parent cell. Before emerging from the sporangium, autospores in Chlorella and Scenedesmus take on all the traits of the parent cell.
