The government of the United Kingdom is an example of which type of monarchy?

Parliamentary monarchies govern the governments of the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Similar systems govern the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Spain, and Sweden. These systems are remarkably stable—possibly the most stable forms of government ever created—and continuously uphold high standards of individual freedoms and human rights.

As head of state, the Monarch retains the executive power, but with the understanding that they will use it sparingly, generally reserving it for ceremonial duties and approving laws. In reality, though, due to their prolonged tenure, heads of state will typically confer with the Monarch on important matters.

Despite their opposition to the governing party, the second-place party or coalition is the loyal opposition and plays a direct role in negotiating laws and regulations. The head of state, who is typically the party leader of a winning party or coalition, must also be elected to office and answer for their decisions and actions on the floor of Parliament.

The system is based on cooperation and compromise between the government, the opposition, and the Monarch (or her representatives). The civil service is also expected to maintain strict neutrality toward political parties and look to the Monarch for rewards and recognition.

Parliamentary privilege also allows for the discussion of any topic in the House (which consists of a lower and an upper chamber) and provides legal immunity for remarks made there. It also allows the courts to interpret and modify legislation that is unclear or lacking.
