The communistic countries controlled by the Soviet Union formed the Warsaw pact
The democratic countries of the west lead by the United States formed NATO.

Since neither the US nor the Soviet Union desired a nuclear conflict, the treaty averting nuclear war kept hostilities at bay.

A conventional land war would be fruitless because the conventional forces of NATO and the Warsaw Pact were relatively equal.

As part of the Cold War, both sides engaged in an arms race in an attempt to outgun one another or obtain a military advantage.
