Why were some South Vietnamese desperate to leave their homeland as the North Vietnamese invaded?

It was because of their opposition to communism and also their association with the Americans and South Vietnamese regime.

Many South Vietnamese supported the communists and constituted the Vietcong. Many however opposed communism and fought in the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN).

Many were associated with the South Vietnamese government of President Thieu and the Americans.

As a result when Saigon fell in 1975 to the communists significant numbers of South Vietnamese tried to flee the country, and many more did so in subsequent years (The Boat People.)
