Who was Yuri Gagarin and what was Vostok 1?

Vostok-1 (pronounced East-1 in Russian) is the spaceship that carried Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961. Yuri Gagrin was a national hero in the USSR, and his death during airplane testing in 1968 was a national tragedy. By the way, Vostok-1 is also a Soviet Antarctic scientific station. It was closed and left in 1957, but all of its equipment was moved into new station Vostok, which is still operational. So, Yuri Gagarin was the first person to leave Earth, fly it around, and return.
