The Coalition recaptured Kuwait and destroyed a large part of the Iraqi Army and much equipment in a short time. Saddam Hussein remained in power and Sanctions were in place.

The Gulf war was a success and the decision not to continue on to Baghdad was controversial but in light of experience probably correct. Quicker action by armored forces might had destroyed the surviving Republican Guard units which would have weaken Saddam further. Imposition of a comprehensive "No Fly" zone would have weaken him further.

There was very little support in the Coalition for further invasion of Iraq as regional powers would understand that Saddam for all his faults kept the Islamists at bay. The defeat kept Saddam's military adventurist spirit contained. Iraq continued to struggle with internal dissent. Sanctions were imposed which led to great suffering by the Iraqi people. The regime was a festering sore in the region.
