In 1989, groups of students, intellectuals and labour activists occupied Tiananmen Square as a form of protest. It was against the corrupt Communist party, as well as a protest against the China's poor economy. The trigger for the protest was the death of the former Communist Party General Secretary, Hu Yaobang.

On June 4, the Government decided to bring an end to these protests. Chinese troops started firing on civilians, whose actions were condemned around the world. The death toll has been estimated to range from several hundreds to several thousands.
