Stars are in equilibrium due to fusion reaction at center pushing outwards and Gravity pulling in wards. When the fuel is almost finished the gravity is reduced and so pull to inside is less.

The fusion reaction pushes outwards more when the fuel inside is almost finished, but pulls inwards less as gravity decreases due to decreased mass. This causes the star to expand outward and turn red giant.
