What is the central nervous system's primary job?

Simply put, the central nervous system runs the entire body.

To be precise, I would not say that the central nervous system (CNS) has a primary function; it is too complex and performs too many vital tasks for me to identify a single, primary function.

Nonetheless, I can think of a few physiological functions where the central nervous system plays a significant role.

Sensory information: Everything that your sensory neurons pick up is sent to the central nervous system (CNS), which processes and communicates with various brain regions to interpret the information the sensory neurons are relaying. The exception to this is information that is transmitted through spinal reflexes.

Motor function: The part of your brain that controls how your muscles move is called the primary motor cortex.

Homeostasis is a state in which the human body is in equilibrium, and it is regulated by the hypothalamus, a region of the brain. For instance, when a person feels cold, the hypothalamus detects the drop in body temperature and triggers responses like shivering to raise body temperature.

Memories and feelings are processed by the limbic system, a part of the central nervous system.

The CNS is involved in almost every major bodily function, which is why there are doctors who specialize in studying it. These examples are by no means exhaustive of all the functions for which it is accountable!
