The International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the definition of a planet in 2006, and the new criteria are as follows: 1. A planet must orbit the Sun; 2. It must have enough mass to overcome rigid body forces and take on a nearly round shape; and 3. It must have cleared other debris from its surrounding region.
