Why were the Balkans a threat to European peace in the 1900s?

Answer 1

The Balkans had many fragmented connections to the 3 major powers that bordered it. Russia, Austro-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The area had also number of successful Nationalist elements.

The region turned into a fuse to the powder keg that had become Europe when combined with the European Powers' brinkmanship.

Strong cultural, religious, and linguistic ties bound the Balkans to the neighboring empires, but these ties were fragmented, making nation-building challenging. Each empire backed the regions it had ties to against the other regions and supporting empires. The region was unusually unstable due to recent conflicts and the rise of nationalism, and the empires themselves were unstable and would soon be destroyed by World War 1.
