Gymnosperms are higher-growing plants with adapted water-saving mechanisms. Because they grow along mountain slopes, their roots retain less water. The high light intensity at higher altitudes speeds up transpiration.

These plants have xeric adaptations to slow down transpiration, such as needle-like leaves, thick cuticles, and sunken stomata.
