Why it is important to study Environmental Science?
Earth is a truly unique place that not only provides us with the necessities for survival but also unleashes destructive forces with great fury. Man has been at the forefront of understanding this life drama since antiquity, and the reason for studying environment science has always been the same: survival. Of course, today we have formalized the exploration and ad-hoc approach of the past into a well-crafted synthesis of the scientific finding and most importantly we have added the idea of consequence management. Environmental science covers the interaction between living and nonliving things and involves numerous disciplines and fields of study, including physics, biology, chemistry, geography, oceanography, etc.
Theoretically, we are more conscious of what we do now because we are researching our surroundings scientifically, documenting, codifying, and creating complex computer models that illustrate the effects of our actions. Despite this, we are still slow and self-aware in the name of progress and wealth accumulation because we are followers of the capitalist ideology.
The communication and education of global issues through journals, international conferences, and the media is another important aspect of environmental science. These issues can range from mining to dynamite fishing, from forest depletion to global warming, and because of development, more infrastructure, transportation systems, and rural-to-urban areas have been created. Because of these rapid changes, it is necessary to study each step that may alter the environment in order to preserve the natural ecosystem or replace it with a better one.
Environmental science is critical to preventing the destruction of our planet. Due to human abuse, the environment is no longer safe, with more natural disasters like hurricanes, draughts, and flash floods occurring as well as climate change. If environmental science is not studied, there is a serious risk that everything we take for granted, including our species, will go extinct.
If man would only use the various discoveries through environmental science, then this world will definitely be a better place to call home not only for us but for the next generation as well. We need to study the environment and the sciences applied into it to find solutions to different environmental issues so that children of tomorrow will still enjoy the healthy and productive environment we still have today.
