The evolution or change in a complex organism is often illustrated in textbooks using the fossil history of the horse. Othniel Marsh published a series of drawings in 1882 that demonstrated how the modern one-toed horse had evolved from a small four-toed ancestor.

The Mesohippus, a presumed ancestor of the early Hyracotherium, had only three toes in front and three in back, a change in toe count that allowed the horse ancestor to run faster than the Hyracotherium, which had four toes in front and three in back.

Protohippus, another horse fossil, had three toes in front and three in back, but only one of the toes made contact with the ground when running; the other two were thought to be vestiges.

Because it only has one toe, the modern horse is far more suited for running.

The fossil horse record is employed as direct evidence against the Neo Darwinian theory of evolution as well as an indirect indicator of Darwinian evolution or change based on adaptation.

The horse fossil record illustrates change but also demonstrates a marked decrease in the organism's complexity, going from a total of 14 toes to a total of 4 toes. This decrease in complexity is consistent with the Neo Darwinian theory, which holds that mutations (accidental changes in the DNA) can account for the increase in complexity of life forms.

Not only is the fossil history of the horse one of the first "proofs" of Darwinian evolution, but it is also one of the main arguments against Neo Darwinian evolution, so it is relevant to both sides of the debate.
