Why is natural gas a nonrenewable resource?

Natural gas is produced by the decomposition of organic matter that has been buried and then exposed to extreme heat and pressure. Because of this, natural gas must be buried very deeply in the earth's crust, either by geological processes or millions of years of sediment building on top of it. Because fossil fuels are being used up far more quickly than they can be produced, natural gas is typically found alongside them.
