Why is it not advisable to wear contact lenses in lab?
Since harmful materials (like acids, bases, and other uncomfortable liquids) can seep through them and become trapped beneath them, and because the last thing the medics (or whoever else called) will check for if you pass out and are unconscious is contact lenses in your eyes—they'll always check the lab for spills and other hazards, not necessarily your eyes.
Therefore, it is imperative that you wear appropriate safety goggles with at least side shields. I TA at my university and use Z87s, which are a common, adequate brand.
