Why is archaea called extremophiles?

Answer 1

Archaea (primitive type bacteria) are called extremophiles because they can live in extreme conditions where normal bacteria can not live.

Since their cell wall differs from that of bacteria, archaea are thought to be distinct from other types of bacteria.

Extremophiles get their name from the fact that archaea are found in extreme environments, such as volcanic vents, extremely high salinity, and below-freezing temperatures.

Extremophiles, which means to love harsh or extreme conditions, derives from the Greek word "philes," which means to love like a brother. Extreme conditions include high heat, high salt, and low temperatures.

Although archaea most likely don't "love" the harsh environments, they can live and grow in places where other bacteria can't.

Answer 2

Archaea are called extremophiles because they are capable of living and thriving in extreme environments that are inhospitable to most other forms of life. These extreme environments include high temperatures, high salinity, acidic or alkaline conditions, and high pressures.
