Why does the body need carbohydrates?

The body needs carbohydrates, more especially glucose, as fuel in order to perform its essential tasks.
First, what happens to the carbohydrates that are consumed in the mouth? The enzyme amylase begins to break down polysaccharides in the mouth's saliva.
These are changed into disaccharides. Keep in mind that human body cells only use glucose, so the body can change other carbohydrates into glucose in different ways.
Following the depletion of glucose, the body will turn to glycogen, which is stored as excess glucose in the muscles and liver and is converted to glucose through a process known as glycogenolysis (lysis meaning to break down).
The body uses fats and amino acids through a process known as gluconeogenesis (neo, meaning new) once glycogen stores are exhausted.
