Why do neurotransmitters have to be removed from the receptors?

Answer 1

When something needs to be excited or stimulated, a neurotransmitter is released from the nerve ending; however, once the task is completed, the neurotransmitter must be removed to prevent the receptor from being continuously excited, which can be hazardous.

Example: When a muscle contracts, the neuromuscular junction releases acetylcholine, which stimulates the muscle cells to contract. If acetylcholine is still present after the contraction, the muscle cells will continue to contract, which will result in tetany.

This type of respiratory muscle injury will result in respiratory failure and death.

Answer 2

Neurotransmitters have to be removed from receptors to terminate their signaling effects, allowing the nervous system to reset and prevent continuous stimulation or inhibition of target cells. This process ensures precise and controlled neural communication, preventing overstimulation or prolonged inhibition of neurons.
