Why are there no snakes in New Zealand?

There are sea snakes in New Zealand (or at least off the coasts of Kiwi).

I am not aware of fossil evidence for snakes in either the North or South Islands, but the reason there are no land snakes in Kiwi is probably because the geological climate has undergone several periods of glaciation, making the islands too cold for cold-blooded land snakes.

Snakes are absent in New Zealand primarily due to its geographical isolation. The country separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana around 85 million years ago, and snakes were not present in the region when it broke away. Additionally, the climate and environmental conditions in New Zealand are not conducive to the survival of snakes, as they prefer warmer climates and certain types of habitats that are lacking in New Zealand.
