Why are neurotransmitters important for brain function?

Answer 1

Because the cells of brain i.e nerve cells or neurons perform their function by the aid of these neurotransmitters.

Brain and spinal cord make central nervous system. The nerve cells contained in brain are specifically termed as inter-neurons or associative neurons.

Neuron is functional unit of brain. The basic function of neuron is to transmit the information in forme of electrical signals. Neurons do so by communicating with each other through synapse(microscopic gap b/w presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons).

As the neurons are not physically connected with each other, so the electrical impulse is transmitted to the next neuron by means of chemical messenger i.e neurotransmitters . That's the reason behind the statement that neurotransmitters are vital for brain function.
