Neurone are usually amitotic i.e. they do not divide like other cells.

All of the membrane-bound organelles that are involved in the metabolic processes of neurons are found in the cell body, with the exception of centrioles.

With a few afferent and efferent exceptions, most neurons are unable to divide and are unable to regenerate because their DNA copying is inhibited.

Therefore, if a neuron is lost, it cannot be replaced during mitosis. The glial cell shields the lost neurons from harm.
