To activate a lightstick, bend the plastic stick so that the glass vial breaks, allowing the chemicals inside to mix with the chemicals in the plastic tube. This reaction releases energy, which is then converted into light by a fluorescent dye. This process is called phosphorescence or chemiluminescence.
